Yukon First Nations and others came together to strategize rebuilding actions for Yukon River chum salmon.
On Feb 10 & 11, the YFNSSA and CYFN hosted a gathering to review the current status of Yukon and Porcupine River chum salmon and to discuss a strategy to rebuild their numbers. We discussed the challenges chum populations face over the course of their lives, as well as regional specific concerns such as dropping water levels at Kluane Lake/River and dewatering events at Fishing Branch River. During the workshop, four major themes around rebuilding needs were identified: address information gaps, increase education and awareness of chum salmon, and enhance advocacy for both chum salmon and their habitat. Additionally, we emphasized the importance of maintaining traditional lifestyles and preserving our relationships with salmon for future generations.
While chum salmon populations have significantly declined, there is still much we can do to support their recovery and the ecosystems that depend upon them.
